HISTORY - The Pizz-A-Thon was created to address the following:

1.  "Kids took for granted, food came from the grocery store" with no appreciation for the agriculture and food industry (the center of the economy of the Midwest). From a focus group study, they viewed a farmer as an old man in overalls chewing on a straw!

2. "Kids had no appreciation that we live in the breadbasket of the world" and only 3% of Earth is adequate for food production, with a great need for soil and water conservation to protect the best soils in the world.

Pizz-A-Thon was created in 1995 at Iowa State University through a Kellogg Foundation "Vison 2020" program and developed over a 20 period. The program has impacted over 8,000 kids in Iowa and Illinois. Goal: Aim at year 2020 with a "state of the art" hands-on, real world educational model. Educators are being sought to help take the program to a new level to be in place by the year 2020.

In 2013, Ames Breakfast Lions Club(5 91 C3 charitable program) became Host.  Kids are excited in learning to serve in the creation of a new "Family Branch Club" to serve our community.  Other kids programs, they assist in support of the ", Lions Leader Dog Program" and "scholarships for diabetes camp" Kids who participate in the Pizz-A-Thon may select the charity or needy family or cause to receive 10% of donations made to the program. Lions want to help develop kid's ethic in "learning to serve."

E. Weber

An early lesson in my 40 years with the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, I learned the agency was truly linked to our survival in its mission to develop good land stewardship. As I was creating the Pizz-A-Thon in 1995, soil and water conservation was at the heart of the program outcome.

W. C. Lowdermilk, former Assistant Chief of the Soil Conservation Service said, "While in Jerusalem in June 1939, I compared the biblical account of the promised land depicted by Moses (Deut. 27:3, 34:1-5) with today's visual evidence. I wondered if Moses looking at this evidence would not have proposed an eleventh commandment. So I composed it myself and reads as follows":

"Thou shall inherit the Holy Earth as a faithful steward, conserving its resources and productivity from generation to generation.

Thou shall safeguard the fields from erosion, thy living waters from drying up, thy forests from desolation and protect thy hills from overgrazing by thy herds, that thy descendants may have abundance forever.

If any shall fail in this stewardship of the land, thy fruitful fields shall become sterile stony ground and wasting gullies, and thy descendants shall decrease and live in poverty or perish form off the face of the Earth."

His story along with others like Hugh Hammond Bennett, founder of the Soil Conservation Service and my personal experience in growing up in the Lum Hollow Watershed, in the loess hills of western Iowa and watching gully erosion eat up our farm like cancer, propelled me to develop a program for youth, aimed at agriculture and soil conservation at it's heart!

The Pizz-A-Thon is designed for "in school" and "after school' including church groups. What a great activity for youth to address world hunger, using Lowdermilk's proposed eleventh commandment!
