Church Youth Group

Youth Group (Scripture-Pizz-A-Thon Project)

WHO: Church, College or High School Youth Group, (mentoring younger children)

Could be part of a Bible School week activities.

TOPIC: Soil is the heart of the Earth, Water is the blood that nourishes. There are more living organisms in a cubic inch of soil than the number of people on Earth.

Soil is at the heart of the Pizz-A-Thon!

Teams create what they think will be the preferred “prize pizza” and invite smaller children in for a pizza party. Let them be the judge on which team has the best pizza and then explain to them how these activities are linked to the bible and could address World hunger.

Use apple demo to help participants appreciate how precious soil is on Earth.

Competition held judging team essays, presentations, soil/growth experiment (using Plexiglas soil/root chamber, medallions and t shirts available from Pizz-A-Thon Partnership) and  tracing of ingredients from soil to team created pizza ingredients (plants, animals, processing, marketing and jobs) on the topic:

“Soil to Slice In Feeding a Hungry World”

Criteria: Using scripture, develop a team proposal on how the Pizz-A-Thon can be used to address world hunger.

Kenneth Quinn, President of the World Food Prize Foundation, Oct. 4, 2013 Issue of the Des Moines Register.

“We have to preserve and sustain the great gifts that we have in land, water and plants and at the same time, we have to use science to multiply the harvest and continue to be true to our State’s tradition of researching around the Globe to feed the hungry.”

Exodus 3:8  And I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

Psalm 24:1  A Psalm of David. The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,

Matthew 13:3-9  And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.

Proverbs 22:9  Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.

Psalm 104:1-35 Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty, covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent. He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters; he makes the clouds his chariot; he rides on the wings of the wind; he makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire. He set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved.

1 Corinthians 4:2  Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy.

1 Corinthians 6-7  I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who makes thing grow.

1 Corinthians 10:26  For “the earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.”

2 Corinthians 9:6-8  The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

Romans 12:6-8  Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
